For insulation, select "Average" if your home is reasonably modern. Choose "Moderate" for sun exposure — an east or west-facing room gets decent sun. Pick "Temperate" if you're in the central US. Hit calculate, and you'll see the recommended cooling capacity is about 8,640 BTU/h. A 9,000 BTU mini-split or window unit would be perfect — not too big, not too small. For a south-facing room in Phoenix (Hot climate, High sun exposure), the same room might need 12,000+ BTU.
About BTU Calculator
BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the cooling capacity of air conditioners. The general rule is 20 BTU per cubic foot of space, adjusted for insulation, sun exposure, and climate. A properly sized unit runs efficiently and dehumidifies well.
An undersized unit runs continuously without cooling properly; an oversized unit short-cycles and fails to remove humidity. This calculator gives a range — for rooms with additional heat sources (kitchens, server rooms) add 4,000-6,000 BTU.
When to Use This Calculator
Buying a window AC unit: Before heading to the store, measure your room and run the calculator. A 200 sq ft living room with good insulation needs about 5,000-6,000 BTU, but the same room with poor insulation and western sun exposure might need 8,000 BTU. Oversizing is just as bad as undersizing — it short-cycles and won't dehumidify properly.
Planning a mini-split installation: Multi-room mini-splits need careful BTU calculations per zone. A 20x15 ft master bedroom (300 sq ft) typically needs 9,000-12,000 BTU, while a small home office (10x10 ft) needs just 5,000-6,000 BTU.
Cooling a home server room: Electronics generate significant heat. For a small 6x8 ft server room with multiple machines, add 3,400 BTU for each 1,000 watts of equipment. A modest server setup might need an extra 8,000 BTU on top of the room's base cooling requirement.
How to Interpret Your Results
The calculator shows a Recommended Cooling Capacity for your room. The Base BTU is the raw calculation. The Minimum and Maximum figures account for a 10% variance — useful because real-world AC units come in standard sizes (5,000, 6,000, 8,000, 9,000, 12,000 BTU, etc.). Choose the nearest available size that falls within your range. If your result is 8,640 BTU, a 9,000 BTU unit is ideal. A 12,000 BTU unit would be oversized and might leave the room feeling clammy because it cools the air too fast without running long enough to remove humidity.
