About Staircase Calculator
Building code typically requires riser heights between 4" and 7.75" with a maximum variation of 3/8" between steps. Tread depth should be at least 10" for residential stairs. The calculator divides total rise by the preferred riser height and adjusts to find equal steps.
The stringer (carriage) length is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem based on total rise and total run. Stringer boards are typically 2x12 lumber. Always check local building codes before construction.
