Before locking that in, compare the month and day: the birthday month of March has already passed in October, so the full 30 years count. The remaining months run from March 15 to October 2, which is 6 full months (March 15 to September 15) plus 17 days (September 15 to October 2). The exact age is therefore 30 years, 6 months, and 17 days.
Now change the check date to February 2, 2024. The birthday has not happened yet, so you must borrow: subtract one from the year count and measure from the last birthday. The person is 29 years old, and the months run from March 15, 2023 to February 2, 2024. That span is 10 full months (March 15 to January 15) plus 18 days. The result is 29 years, 10 months, and 18 days. This borrowing step is where manual math most often fails, because people forget that the birthday anchors the count rather than the start of the calendar year.
Leap days add another layer. Someone born on February 29, 2000 only has a calendar anniversary in leap years, so the calculator treats February 28 as the birthday in common years. Its day count also correctly includes the extra days contributed by the leap years 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 that fall inside the interval.
