Area Formulas for Common Shapes

- Half-circle area: (π × 3²) / 2 = 14.14 sq ft
- Total area: 252 + 14.14 = 266.14 sq ft
- Add 10% waste: 266.14 × 1.10 = 292.75 sq ft

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The calculator returns the formula it used alongside the result, which makes it easy to check your inputs against what you meant to enter. The most frequent error people make is mixing units in a single calculation — entering length in feet and width in inches, for example, produces an area that is neither square feet nor square inches. Choose one unit for every dimension and convert before calculating. Another classic slip is using the diameter when the circle and sector modes ask for the radius. A circular bed with a 10-foot diameter should be entered as radius 5; entering 10 instead quadruples the result to roughly 314 square feet.
The sector shape is the one most users misjudge. Its formula multiplies the angle in degrees over 360 by pi times the radius squared, so a quarter-circle (90 degrees) with a radius of 4 feet gives 90/360 times pi times 16, or about 12.57 square feet. Entering 90 as if it were a fraction of a full circle rather than degrees returns a wrong answer. With the ellipse, remember that the inputs are the semi-major and semi-minor axes, not the full widths — a 6-foot by 4-foot ellipse uses 3 and 2 as its inputs. For trapezoids, the two bases must be the parallel sides, and the height must be measured perpendicular to them, not along a slanted edge. A parallelogram looks similar to a rectangle, but its area is base times the perpendicular height, so a tilted parallelogram with a 6-foot base and a 4-foot side edge has less area than a 6 by 4 rectangle unless the vertical height really is 4 feet.
Finally, always build waste into real projects. For tile, hardwood, or carpet, add about 10% to account for cuts and breakage, then round material orders up to full boxes. A 266-square-foot floor needs roughly 293 square feet after waste is added. Under-ordering by even 5% means an extra trip to the store and a real chance the replacement boxes come from a different dye lot.
