Countdown calendar to special event

Using the Countdown Calculator

Enter your target date and time. The calculator shows the total time remaining broken down into years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. A live ticking countdown displays the most granular view. You can choose to display only the largest unit (days remaining) or the full breakdown.

The calculator supports multiple simultaneous countdowns. Save each countdown with a name and optional note. Countdowns are stored locally in your browser for future visits. Shareable links let you send countdowns to others.

Time Breakdown

See the remaining time in multiple formats: total days only, or broken into years/months/days, or hours/minutes/seconds. A visual progress bar shows how much time has passed between the start and target dates.

Repeating Countdowns

Set countdowns that repeat annually (birthdays, anniversaries) or at custom intervals. The calculator automatically resets to the next occurrence after the current one passes.

Multiple Time Zones

Set the time zone for your event. The countdown adjusts to your local time zone automatically. Perfect for events in different cities or countries.

Popular Countdown Events

Real-World Example

A wedding is planned for September 15, 2027. Using the countdown calculator from July 11, 2026:

  • Years: 1 year remaining
  • Months: 14 months
  • Weeks: 61 weeks
  • Days: 431 days
  • Hours: 10,344 hours
  • Minutes: 620,640 minutes
  • Seconds: 37,238,400 seconds (updated live)

The countdown creates urgency for wedding planning tasks: book venue (now), send save-the-dates (12 months before), order invitations (6 months before), finalize catering (3 months before), send final invitations (6-8 weeks before), confirm all vendors (1 month before).

How the Live Countdown Keeps Time

The countdown is a repeating timer rather than a single calculation. When you click "Start Countdown," the calculator reads your target date and time, builds a Date object from it, and sets up a JavaScript interval that fires every 1,000 milliseconds. On every tick it reads the device clock again and subtracts it from the target, so the display stays synchronized even if you keep the page open for hours.

Each tick converts the remaining milliseconds into four units. Total days are the whole number of milliseconds divided by 86,400,000 (the milliseconds in one day). The leftover milliseconds then supply hours using 3,600,000 per hour, minutes using 60,000, and finally whole seconds. This is why the display reads 1d 2h 3m 4s rather than a single large number — every unit is the remainder of the one above it.

Check the math against the wedding example above: 431 days from July 11, 2026 to September 15, 2027. Multiply 431 by 24 to get 10,344 hours, then by 1,440 for 620,640 minutes, then by 86,400 for 37,238,400 seconds. On screen you see those same totals as four separate rolling boxes, with the seconds box changing every tick. When the difference reaches zero or less, the interval is stopped and the display switches to "Countdown Complete!".

  • Leave the page in the foreground for a smooth second-by-second countdown. Browsers throttle timers in background tabs, so a minimized tab may update less often and then jump forward when you return.
  • Use the Stop button when you want to freeze the display without clearing the target. Restarting continues from the same target date and time.
  • Set the time field deliberately. Two countdowns to the same date set for 00:00 and 23:59 will differ by almost a full day in the day box.
  • Keep your device clock and time zone accurate — the countdown subtracts your local time from the target as you entered it, so an offset clock shifts the whole result.
