How Date Difference Calculations Work
Calculating the difference between two dates seems simple but has complexities. Months have different lengths (28 to 31 days), and leap years add an extra day in February. A naive calculation might say January 31 to February 28 is 28 days, but if you consider it as 1 month, the answer depends on how you measure.

Real-World Examples
Example 1: You sign a lease on June 1 for 12 months. When does it end? June 1 of the following year. But if you signed on January 31 for 1 month, the end date is February 28 (or 29 in a leap year), since February 31 does not exist.

Worked Example: Tracing the Calculation
Enter January 15, 2026 as the start and March 30, 2026 as the end date to watch every output line resolve. The calendar difference is straightforward: January 15 to February 15 is one month, February 15 to March 15 is a second, and March 15 to March 30 adds 15 days, so the calculator reports 0 years, 2 months, and 15 days. The total-days line counts the actual calendar span — 16 remaining days in January, 28 in February, and 30 in March — for a total of 74 days. Divide by 7 and you get 10.6 weeks; multiply by 24 and you get 1,776 hours; multiply again by 60 and you get 106,560 minutes. All six formats describe the same interval, and each is useful in a different context: months for contract language, days for scheduling, and minutes for timesheet billing.
Month-end dates show why the tool borrows days between months. Start at March 31 and end on June 10, 2026. A direct subtraction of dates gives -21, which cannot stand, so the calculator borrows the 31 days of May into the day figure, ending with 2 months and 10 days. The total-days line confirms the logic: 30 days in April, 31 in May, and 10 into June is 71 days. The same borrowing rule is why a lease signed on January 31 for one month ends on February 28 rather than February 31 — the calculator rolls to the actual last day of the shorter month.
Use the total-days figure as your tiebreaker whenever the month-based result feels ambiguous. Two dates separated by the same "2 months" label can differ by 58 to 62 actual days depending on which months fall between them, so contracts that carry serious penalties should always cite the total-day count as well.
