How Fuel Cost Is Calculated

The basic formula is simple: distance divided by fuel efficiency, multiplied by fuel price. If you are driving 300 miles, your car gets 25 miles per gallon, and gas costs $3.50 per gallon, the calculation is (300 / 25) × 3.50 = $42.00.

This works for any unit system. If you drive 500 kilometers, your car gets 15 km per liter, and fuel costs Rs. 100 per liter, the calculation is (500 / 15) × 100 = Rs. 3,333.

  • Total fuel cost: 52.3 × $3.60 = $188.18
  • Fuel stops (assuming 15-gallon tank): 4 stops
  • Estimated driving time: 17 hours (excluding stops)

If they reduced speed from 75 to 65 mph and improved MPG to 26, the fuel cost drops to $159.23, saving $29 on the trip.

Running the Same Trip in Both Unit Systems

The calculator keeps a single formula underneath and simply relabels the units, which makes it easy to compare trips across countries. Fuel needed equals distance divided by efficiency, and total cost equals fuel needed times the price per unit.

In imperial units: a 300-mile drive at 36 MPG with gas at $4.50 per gallon needs 300 ÷ 36 = 8.33 gallons, costing 8.33 × $4.50 = $37.50. Split four ways, each passenger pays about $9.38. Now run the same logic in metric for a 500 km trip at 15 km/L with fuel at $1.50 per liter: 500 ÷ 15 = 33.3 liters, costing 33.3 × $1.50 = $50.00. The structure is identical — only the units change.

The efficiency toggle matters because the numbers are not interchangeable: 36 MPG converts to about 15.3 km/L, and entering 36 in km/L mode would overestimate the fuel needed by more than two and a half times. Select the unit that matches your vehicle's manual before entering the efficiency value, and the calculator applies the same unit system to the distance and price fields automatically.
