Grade Calculator: Calculate Your Course Grades and GPA

Keeping track of your grades throughout the semester helps you know where you stand and what you need to achieve on final exams to reach your target grade. Our Grade Calculator handles multiple grading scenarios: calculate your current grade based on weighted assignments, determine what score you need on a final exam to achieve a desired grade, and compute your overall GPA across multiple courses.

How Grade Calculation Works

Most courses use a weighted grading system where different assignments have different percentages of the final grade. For example, homework might be 20%, quizzes 30%, midterm 25%, and final exam 25%. Your current grade is the weighted average of all completed assignments: (grade1 × weight1 + grade2 × weight2 + ...) / total weight completed.

The final exam calculator determines the minimum score you need: required grade = (desired grade - current weighted grade) / final exam weight. This helps you prioritize study time across different courses.

Using the Grade Calculator

Enter each assignment or category name, your grade (as a percentage), and the weight toward your final grade. The calculator shows your current weighted average, what grade you are on track for, and what you need on remaining assignments to reach your target.

In the final exam mode, enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired final grade. The calculator shows exactly what percentage you need on the final. If the required score is above 100%, you cannot reach that grade — the calculator tells you the highest grade possible.

Grading Scales

Standard Letter Grades (US)

A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = below 60%. Some schools use plus/minus grading (A-, B+, etc.) with narrower ranges. The calculator supports both standard and plus/minus grading.

GPA Calculation

Grade Point Average converts letter grades to numeric values: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Weighted GPA adds extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses. Our calculator handles both unweighted and weighted GPA calculations.

Percentage-Based Grading

Some courses use direct percentage grading without letter conversion. The calculator displays your percentage score alongside the letter grade equivalent for reference.

Strategies for Improving Your Grade

  • Focus on high-weight items: Prioritize studying for exams and major projects that carry more weight in your final grade
  • Track your progress: Update the calculator after each graded assignment to see your updated standing
  • Talk to your teacher: If you are close to the next grade boundary, ask about extra credit opportunities or grade bump policies
  • Drop low scores: Some courses drop the lowest quiz or assignment score — factor this into your calculations
  • Plan your final exam strategy: Use the calculator to determine the minimum score needed, and allocate study time accordingly across subjects

Real-World Example

A student has the following grades in a course: Homework (20% weight) average 92%, Quizzes (30%) average 78%, Midterm (25%) scored 85%, and the Final Exam (25%) is upcoming. The student wants an A (90%):

  • Current weighted grade: (92 × 0.20 + 78 × 0.30 + 85 × 0.25) / 0.75 = (18.4 + 23.4 + 21.25) / 0.75 = 63.05 / 0.75 = 84.07%
  • Required final exam score for 90%: (90 - 84.07 × 0.75) / 0.25 = (90 - 63.05) / 0.25 = 26.95 / 0.25 = 107.8%
  • Result: An A is mathematically impossible. The highest possible grade with 100% on the final: 84.07 × 0.75 + 100 × 0.25 = 63.05 + 25 = 88.05% (B+)

The student should aim for a B+ and focus their study time on other courses where an A is still achievable.
