How ROI Is Calculated

The basic ROI formula is: ROI = (Net Profit / Cost of Investment) × 100. Net profit is the gain from the investment minus the cost. If you invest $10,000 and receive $12,500, your net profit is $2,500 and your ROI is ($2,500 / $10,000) × 100 = 25%.

ROI vs Other Metrics

  • Net profit (after ad spend): $9,000 - $5,000 = $4,000
  • Simple ROI: ($4,000 / $5,000) × 100 = 80%
  • Annualized ROI: (1 + 0.80)^(12/3) - 1 = 1.80^4 - 1 = 949% (if the campaign's performance were sustained for a full year)

Worked Example: Tracing the Calculator's Two Numbers

Enter an initial investment of $10,000 and a final value of $12,500, then set the holding period to 1 year. The tool first subtracts to find net profit of $2,500, then divides that profit by the initial $10,000 and multiplies by 100 to report a total ROI of 25.00%. Because the holding period is exactly one year, the annualized figure matches the total at 25.00%.

Now change the period to 5 years while keeping the same values. The total ROI stays 25.00%, because total ROI ignores time. The annualized tile, however, drops to 4.56% — the tool applies the formula (12,500 ÷ 10,000)^(1 ÷ 5) − 1 and multiplies by 100. That is the key distinction this calculator is built to show: a 25% total gain over one year is a strong result, but the same gain spread over five years is a modest 4.56% yearly return that barely beats a high-yield savings account.
