Shipping Calculator: Estimate Delivery Costs and Times
Shipping Calculator: Estimate Delivery Costs and Times
Whether you are running an e-commerce store, sending a gift to a friend, or moving across the country, knowing shipping costs upfront helps you budget and choose the best carrier. Our Shipping Calculator estimates shipping rates based on package weight, dimensions, distance, and delivery speed. Compare costs across major carriers and find the most affordable option for your shipment.
How Shipping Costs Are Calculated
Shipping rates depend on several factors: package weight and dimensions (larger or heavier packages cost more), distance (local vs regional vs national vs international), delivery speed (standard, expedited, overnight), and additional services (insurance, tracking, signature confirmation).
Carriers also use dimensional weight (DIM weight) for lightweight but bulky packages. DIM weight = (Length × Width × Height) / DIM divisor. If DIM weight exceeds actual weight, the carrier charges based on DIM weight. The standard DIM divisor for domestic shipments is 139 (for inches per pound).
Using the Shipping Calculator
Enter your package weight, dimensions (length, width, height), origin and destination ZIP codes or cities, and desired delivery speed. The calculator shows estimated rates for USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL where applicable. You can compare standard, expedited, and overnight options side by side.
For e-commerce sellers, the calculator also shows estimated delivery dates based on the carrier's service standards, helping you set accurate customer expectations for delivery times.
Carrier Comparison
USPS (United States Postal Service)
Best for small, lightweight packages under 2 lbs. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes offer predictable pricing regardless of weight. Priority Mail Express provides overnight delivery with money-back guarantee. Media Mail is the cheapest option for books and media.
UPS
Best for medium to large packages and business shipping. Ground shipping is cost-effective for non-urgent deliveries. UPS Next Day Air and 2nd Day Air are reliable for time-sensitive shipments. UPS offers volume discounts for business accounts.
FedEx
Comparable to UPS with strong overnight and express options. FedEx Ground is competitive for residential delivery. FedEx Home Delivery specializes in residential addresses. FedEx SmartPost hands off to USPS for final delivery in remote areas.
DHL
Best for international shipping. DHL Express offers fast global delivery with extensive tracking. More competitive for cross-border shipments than US-based carriers for many destinations.
Shipping Cost-Saving Tips
- Use flat-rate boxes: USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are ideal for heavy items shipped within a zone — one price regardless of weight
- Compare carriers: Rates vary significantly between carriers for the same package. Always check at least three options.
- Optimize packaging: Reduce box size to minimize DIM weight charges. A smaller box can save 20-40% on shipping.
- Print labels at home: Online rates are significantly cheaper than counter rates at the post office or shipping store.
- Ship in bulk: If you run a business, negotiate volume discounts with carriers or use a fulfillment service.
- Consider regional carriers: Regional carriers like Ontrac or LaserShip offer competitive rates for specific geographic areas.
Real-World Example
A 5-pound package measuring 12×10×8 inches shipped from New York to Los Angeles:
- Actual weight: 5 lbs
- DIM weight: (12 × 10 × 8) / 139 = 6.9 lbs (billed at 7 lbs)
- USPS Priority Mail: ~$16.50 (5-day delivery)
- UPS Ground: ~$14.75 (5-day delivery)
- FedEx Ground: ~$15.20 (5-day delivery)
- UPS 2nd Day Air: ~$45.00
- UPS Next Day Air: ~$85.00
UPS Ground is the cheapest option for this shipment. If the same package were shipped in a box that fits the USPS Medium Flat Rate box, the cost would be a flat $17.10 regardless of weight.
