Time Zone Converter: Convert Times Across World Time Zones

Coordinating across time zones is one of the biggest challenges of remote work, international travel, and global communication. Our Time Zone Converter instantly converts a time from one time zone to any other, showing the current time in major cities worldwide. Whether you are scheduling a meeting, catching a flight, or calling family overseas, this tool makes time zone math effortless.

Understanding Time Zones

The world is divided into 24 time zones, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard. Time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC: UTC-5 (Eastern US), UTC+1 (Central Europe), UTC+5:30 (India), UTC+8 (China, Singapore).

Daylight Saving Time (DST) adds complexity. Many countries advance clocks by one hour in spring and fall back in autumn. The US and Canada observe DST from March to November. Europe observes DST from March to October. Many countries near the equator do not observe DST at all.

Using the Time Zone Converter

Select the source time zone and the target time zone. Enter the time and date in the source zone. The calculator instantly shows the equivalent time in the target zone, accounting for DST where applicable. A city search feature lets you find time zones by city name.

The world clock view shows the current time in dozens of major cities simultaneously, with color coding for day/night hours. This is useful for finding overlapping business hours across different regions.

Major Time Zones Reference

North America

UTC-8: Pacific (Los Angeles, Vancouver). UTC-7: Mountain (Denver, Phoenix no DST). UTC-6: Central (Chicago, Mexico City). UTC-5: Eastern (New York, Toronto). UTC-4: Atlantic (Halifax, Puerto Rico no DST). UTC-9: Alaska. UTC-10: Hawaii (no DST).

Europe

UTC+0: Western (London, Dublin, Lisbon). UTC+1: Central (Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid). UTC+2: Eastern (Helsinki, Athens, Bucharest). UTC+3: Moscow (no DST since 2014). All European zones observe DST except Russia, Belarus, and Iceland.

Asia and Pacific

UTC+3: Arabian (Riyadh, Moscow). UTC+4: Gulf (Dubai, Baku). UTC+5: Pakistan. UTC+5:30: India. UTC+6: Bangladesh. UTC+7: Indochina (Bangkok, Hanoi). UTC+8: China, Singapore, Perth. UTC+9: Japan, Korea. UTC+10: Eastern Australia. UTC+12: New Zealand.

Time Zone Conversion Tips

  • UTC as reference: Always convert both times to UTC when comparing across multiple zones. This avoids confusion with DST.
  • DST awareness: Many countries change DST on different dates. The US springs forward in March, while Europe springs forward in late March.
  • Half-hour zones: Some time zones use 30-minute offsets: India (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), Newfoundland (UTC-3:30).
  • Business hours overlap: The best overlap for US East Coast and Western Europe is 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM UTC (9-11 AM EST, 2-4 PM CET).
  • Avoid midnight confusion: When scheduling across date boundaries, specify both date and time. 10:00 PM EST on March 5 is 3:00 AM UTC on March 6.

Real-World Example

A team in New York (EST, UTC-5) needs to schedule a meeting with colleagues in London (GMT, UTC+0), Mumbai (IST, UTC+5:30), and Sydney (AEDT, UTC+11):

  • Proposed time: 10:00 AM EST (New York)
  • London: 3:00 PM GMT (during DST: 4:00 PM BST)
  • Mumbai: 8:30 PM IST
  • Sydney: 2:00 AM AEDT (next day)
  • Best compromise: 8:00 AM EST → London 1:00 PM, Mumbai 6:30 PM, Sydney 12:00 AM (midnight)

No time works for all four locations during regular business hours simultaneously. The overlap between New York, London, and Mumbai is approximately 8:00-11:00 AM EST (1:00-4:00 PM London, 6:30-9:30 PM Mumbai). Sydney would need to join late or catch the recording.
