Tip Calculator: Split Restaurant Bills Fairly and Easily

Dining out with friends or family often leads to awkward moments when the bill arrives. How much tip should you leave? How do you split it evenly or by share? Our Tip Calculator handles all of these scenarios: calculate the tip amount based on service quality, split the total among any number of people, or split by individual shares when people ordered different amounts. No more mental math or phone calculator fumbling at the table.

How Tip Calculations Work

Standard tipping practices vary by country. In the United States, 15-20% is customary for good service. In Canada, 15-18% is standard. European countries typically include service charge, but leaving 5-10% extra is appreciated. Our calculator lets you set any tip percentage you choose.

The formula is straightforward: Tip = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage / 100). Total = Bill Amount + Tip. Per Person = Total / Number of People. For split-by-share: each person pays their share of the pre-tip bill plus their proportional share of the tip.

Using the Tip Calculator

Enter the total bill amount, select your desired tip percentage (or enter a custom amount), and specify how many ways to split the bill. The calculator shows the tip amount, total bill including tip, and the amount each person pays.

For the split-by-share mode, enter each person's individual pre-tip amount. The calculator distributes the tip proportionally based on what each person ordered. This is ideal for groups where people ordered items of significantly different values.

Tipping Around the World

United States

15-20% for restaurant service, $1-2 per drink at bars, 15-20% for taxi rides, $1-5 per bag for hotel porters. Tips are expected as service workers earn below minimum wage with the assumption of tips.

Canada

15-18% standard at restaurants, 10-15% for hair salons and personal services. Most restaurants include a tip line on credit card receipts. Some establishments add automatic gratuity for parties of 6 or more.

Europe

Service is usually included (servizio incluso in Italy, service compris in France). Rounding up or leaving 5-10% for exceptional service is appreciated but not expected. In the UK, 10-12.5% is common where service charge is not already added.

Asia

Tipping is not customary in Japan and can be considered rude. In China, no tipping is expected. In India, 5-10% is appreciated at restaurants. In Thailand, 10% is standard at nicer restaurants.

Tipping Etiquette Tips

  • Check the bill first: Some restaurants automatically add a gratuity (especially for large parties). Do not double-tip.
  • Tip on the pre-tax amount: Calculate your tip based on the food and drink total, not the tax-included total.
  • Cash tips preferred: Tip in cash when possible — the server receives the full amount immediately rather than waiting for credit card processing.
  • Buffets: 10% is standard for buffet service since the server primarily clears plates and refills drinks.
  • Takeout: 10% is appropriate for takeout orders, especially if the staff packaged your order and checked everything.

Real-World Example

A dinner party of 4 people with a bill of $186.50 wants to leave 18% tip and split evenly:

  • Tip amount: $186.50 × 0.18 = $33.57
  • Total with tip: $186.50 + $33.57 = $220.07
  • Per person (even split): $220.07 / 4 = $55.02

If instead the group ordered different amounts — Alice $62, Bob $45, Carol $38, Dave $41.50 — and wants to split the tip proportionally: each person's share of the total bill determines their share of the tip. Alice pays $62 + ($62/$186.50 × $33.57) = $62 + $11.16 = $73.16.
