Behind the scenes, every non-temperature conversion works by scaling through one base unit per category. The converter takes your value, multiplies by your "from" unit's factor, and divides by the "to" unit's factor. Temperature is the only category that branches into its own formula, because its scales have different zero points.
Convert 5 US gallons to liters as a test. In the volume table, 1 gallon equals 3.78541 liters and 1 liter equals 1, so the engine computes 5 × 3.78541 ÷ 1 = 18.927 liters — the six-decimal result the widget shows. Reverse the direction with 1 liter to gallons: 1 × 1 ÷ 3.78541 = 0.264 gallons. The same two-step pattern handles data storage, where the table is binary: 1 GB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1 MB equals 1,048,576 bytes, so 1 GB converts to exactly 1,024 MB.
- For temperature, expect linear formulas, not factors: 0°C → 32°F uses °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
- Results print to six decimals, so the exact 25.4 mm = 1 inch shows as 1 exactly while rounded pairs like pounds-to-kilograms carry trailing digits.
