Bricks Calculator: Estimate How Many Bricks You Need

Planning a brick wall, patio, or retaining wall? Estimating the number of bricks you need is the first step in any masonry project. Order too few and you risk delays and color mismatches from different batches. Order too many and you waste money. Our Bricks Calculator estimates the number of bricks, mortar volume, and total cost based on your wall dimensions, brick size, and mortar joint thickness.

Brick wall construction and masonry

How Brick Calculations Work

The number of bricks needed depends on the wall area, brick size, and mortar joint thickness. Standard US bricks measure 7.5 × 3.5 × 2.25 inches, but sizes vary by region and application. A standard mortar joint is 3/8 inch thick. The formula accounts for the brick dimensions plus the mortar joint to determine how many bricks fit per square foot.

Typically, a standard brick wall uses about 7 bricks per square foot (for a single-layer wall). A double-layer (structural) wall uses about 14 bricks per square foot. Always add 5-10% for waste, breakage, and cuts.

Using the Bricks Calculator

Enter the wall length and height, select your brick size (or enter custom dimensions), and specify the mortar joint thickness. The calculator shows the number of bricks needed, the wall area in square feet, the mortar volume in cubic feet, and the estimated cost based on local brick prices.

The calculator supports different wall types: single brick (4-inch wall), double brick (8-inch wall), and veneer (brick facing over another structure). It also handles openings — subtract windows and doors from the total area for more accurate estimates.

Brick Types and Sizes

Standard Modular Brick

3.5 × 2.25 × 7.5 inches. Most common in the US. Requires about 7 bricks per square foot. Used for houses, small buildings, and retaining walls.

Jumbo Brick

Larger than modular, typically 4 × 3 × 8 inches. Fewer bricks per square foot means faster installation. Used for larger commercial and industrial projects.

Thin Brick / Brick Veneer

Thinner (about 1 inch deep) used as a decorative facing. Applied to existing walls or sheathing. Lighter weight and requires less structural support.

Pavers

Used for walkways, patios, and driveways. Typically 4 × 8 inches and 2-3 inches thick. Different shapes (herringbone, basket weave) affect the number needed.

Mortar Estimation

Mortar is a mixture of cement, sand, and water used to bond bricks together. A typical brick wall uses about 1 cubic foot of mortar for every 100 bricks. Mortar also fills the vertical head joints and horizontal bed joints.

The calculator estimates both the mortar volume and the materials needed: cement (usually Type N or Type S for above-grade walls), sand, and optionally lime. A standard mortar mix ratio is 1 part cement to 3-4 parts sand.

Tips for Ordering Bricks

  • Add 10% waste: Order 10% more bricks than the calculated amount to account for breakage, cuts, and future repairs
  • Buy from one batch: Bricks from different manufacturing batches can have subtle color variations. Order all bricks at once from the same batch.
  • Consider pallet sizes: Bricks are typically sold by the pallet (400-500 bricks depending on size). Calculate how many pallets you need.
  • Order extra for repairs: Keep 20-30 extra bricks stored for future repairs or additions to match existing brick perfectly.
  • Include brick returns: Corners and edges require cut bricks. A brick return (corner) needs about 50% more bricks per linear foot.

Real-World Example

A 20-foot long, 6-foot tall single-brick wall using standard modular bricks (7.5 × 3.5 × 2.25 inches) with 3/8-inch mortar joints:

  • Wall area: 20 × 6 = 120 square feet
  • Bricks per square foot: ~7
  • Total bricks: 120 × 7 = 840 bricks
  • Add 10% waste: 840 × 1.10 = 924 bricks
  • Mortar needed: 840 / 100 = 8.4 cubic feet
  • Bags of mortar mix: Approximately 16-18 bags (60-lb bags cover about 0.5 cubic ft each)
  • Estimated cost at $0.50/brick: 924 × $0.50 = $462 plus mortar
