Tile Calculator: Estimate Tiles for Your Floor or Wall Project

Tile Calculator: Estimate Tiles for Your Floor or Wall Project

Tiling a floor, backsplash, or shower requires precise material estimates. Order too few tiles and you risk color variation between batches. Order too many and you waste money on non-returnable tiles. Our Tile Calculator estimates the number of tiles needed, the required grout and thinset, and the total cost based on room dimensions, tile size, and layout pattern.

How Tile Calculations Work

The basic calculation: total tiles = (room area / tile area) + waste factor. Each tile covers a specific area based on its dimensions. A 12×12 inch tile covers 1 square foot. A 6×24 inch tile covers 1 square foot. For walls, measure the width and height of each wall section separately. For floors, measure length and width.

Always include waste: 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal layouts, and 20% for complex patterns like herringbone or basket weave. These extra tiles cover cuts, breakage during installation, and future repairs.

Using the Tile Calculator

Enter the room dimensions (length and width for floors, width and height for walls). Enter the tile dimensions (length and width). Select the layout pattern (straight grid, diagonal, herringbone, or brick). Specify the grout joint width (typically 1/8 inch for rectified tiles, 3/16 to 1/4 inch for non-rectified tiles).

The calculator shows the number of tiles needed by piece and by box, the total square footage, the estimated grout and thinset quantities, and a visual layout diagram. You can enter the tile price per piece or per square foot for cost estimates.

Tile Types

Ceramic Tile

Most common. Affordable, available in endless colors and patterns. Glazed ceramic has a protective coating. Unglazed is more natural but requires sealing. Suitable for walls and light-traffic floors. Price: $1-15 per square foot.

Porcelain Tile

Denser and harder than ceramic. Through-body color means chips are less visible. Lower water absorption (under 0.5%) makes it suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor use. Price: $3-20 per square foot.

Natural Stone

Marble, granite, travertine, slate, and limestone. Each piece is unique. Requires sealing and more maintenance. Suitable for floors, walls, and countertops. Price: $5-30+ per square foot.

Glass Tile

Used for backsplashes, accent walls, and decorative borders. Available in sheets of small tiles (1×1 or 2×2 inch mosaics). Requires special thin-set and grout. Price: $7-30 per square foot.

Grout and Thinset Estimation

Grout fills the joints between tiles. The amount needed depends on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. Larger tiles with wider joints need more grout. Dark grout hides stains better than light grout but shows efflorescence more.

Thinset mortar bonds tiles to the substrate. Coverage depends on trowel notch size: 1/4×1/4 inch trowel covers about 50-60 sq ft per 50-lb bag. Larger tiles need larger notches and more thinset. Our calculator estimates both grout and thinset based on your specific project.

Layout Patterns and Waste Factors

  • Straight grid: 10% waste — simplest pattern, fewest cuts
  • Brick/running bond: 10-12% waste — offset pattern, slightly more cuts
  • Diagonal: 15% waste — more angled cuts along walls, more breakage risk
  • Herringbone: 20% waste — complex angled pattern, many small cuts
  • Basket weave: 20% waste — intricate pattern with multiple tile sizes
  • Modular patterns: 15-20% waste — patterns using multiple tile sizes require careful layout planning

Real-World Example

A 5×7 foot bathroom floor with 12×12 inch porcelain tiles, straight grid pattern, 1/8-inch grout joints:

  • Floor area: 5 × 7 = 35 sq ft
  • Tiles needed (no waste): 35 tiles (each covers 1 sq ft)
  • Add 10% waste: 35 × 1.10 = 38.5, round up to 39 tiles
  • Tiles per box (typically 10): 39 / 10 = 3.9, order 4 boxes
  • Thinset: 35 sq ft / 55 sq ft per bag = 0.64, order 1 bag
  • Grout (sand-based): Approximately 5-7 lbs for 35 sq ft at 1/8-inch joints

If using a diagonal pattern: 35 × 1.15 = 40.25, round up to 41 tiles, order 5 boxes (50 tiles, keeping extra for future repairs).
